The Los Angeles City Lifeguard Service has been around since 1918 and operates under two divisions, open water and pools. Read about the history of lifeguarding in the City of Los Angeles. The L.A. City Open Water Lifeguards are highly trained to USLA standards and perform lifeguard services at five of the City’s open water facilities, and are the core of the Los Angeles City Lifeguard Association. City Pool Lifeguards operate all of the City's pool facilities, providing lifeguard services, swim lessons, and perform pool maintenance and upkeep. The City of Los Angeles is the second largest pool lifeguarding agency in the country, and have more lifeguards than any other lifeguarding operation in California.
