need new rescue boat

Postby pirana » Thu Jul 21, 2005 5:58 am

We are currently in the process of coming up with a design for a new rescue boat (for a lake). What features have worked for everyone else? Equipment, electronics, dimensions? We don't need anything as elaborate as an ocean rescue boat, but something still practical for lifeguarding. Please give me your input!

We have been fairly successful with using a 30 ft twin outboard. We chose to go with an outboard for ease of motoring around in shallow water. You also want to consider the weight of the boat to give a shallower draft. We also used prop guards to help protect the props from debre in the lake, which also double as a saftey factor when your lifeguards and/or swimmer are near the boat. This is biggest concern we had.

Engine Type

Something you may want to consider is what will the main purpose of the boat be? This should let you determine if you go with gas or diesel. Gas engines will usually give more "get up and go" with faster acceleration, and a higher overall top speed. However, if you plan to do alot of towing, a diesel inboard might be the way you want to go since they tend to have more torque.

Go with Gas

Go with Gas. I don't think you'll be towing anything big enough in the lake to justify using a diesel.

Rescue Boats: What are your needs?

Postby Flipper » Sun Jul 24, 2005 9:09 pm

When researching rescue boats, look at what your agency's needs are and tailor it for those specific needs. Do you tow alot of boats, PWCs, Windsurfers, etc? Do you have a dive team? Perform swim rescues from a vessel? How often do you patrol your area? Look at agencies that have similar operations and talk to them about their vessels. Ask for "ride alongs." Will there be multiple boat operators or just a few? These are all important questions to ask. When my agency researched for a new replacement vessel, we did our homework! Try to work with your mechanics since they'll be working on the engines frequently. They'll also recommend makes and models that they like and are proven. Regarding electronics, I don't think you'll need GPS or Radar. Maybe a depth sounder for Search and Rescue/Recovery. A good PA and light system will be necessary. I don't think you'll need a VHF (marine band) radio to communicate with the Coast Guard. You'll need a good department mobile radio and antenna to communicate with H.Q. I hope this info helps. Good luck.
