When researching rescue boats, look at what your agency's needs are and tailor it for those specific needs. Do you tow alot of boats, PWCs, Windsurfers, etc? Do you have a dive team? Perform swim rescues from a vessel? How often do you patrol your area? Look at agencies that have similar operations and talk to them about their vessels. Ask for "ride alongs." Will there be multiple boat operators or just a few? These are all important questions to ask. When my agency researched for a new replacement vessel, we did our homework! Try to work with your mechanics since they'll be working on the engines frequently. They'll also recommend makes and models that they like and are proven. Regarding electronics, I don't think you'll need GPS or Radar. Maybe a depth sounder for Search and Rescue/Recovery. A good PA and light system will be necessary. I don't think you'll need a VHF (marine band) radio to communicate with the Coast Guard. You'll need a good department mobile radio and antenna to communicate with H.Q. I hope this info helps. Good luck.
